The Plaza vs. Dylan’s Candy Bar: SundayFunday!

My life is JUST like this television show, seriously 😉

I don’t know about other NYC women, but I definitely enjoy shows like Gossip Girl and Sex and the City infinitely more now that I live here. There is something extremely gratifying about seeing Nate kiss Serena in the exact same park I run in every day. Or watching Carrie run in her 6-inch heels down the same street I live. Plus these shows make my little city seem so glamorous. The extravagant brunches, the unbelievable shopping, the chique clubs, can you believe the fabulousness of it all? Well, you may be just shocked to find out that I rarely frequent these “exclusive” venues. Indeed, while some savvy New Yorkers are downing mimosas at an over-priced brunch, I’m finishing a long run and experimenting with Wacky Food Combos. But with company in town from Nebraska, we decided to pretend for a little bit 🙂

First up: brunch at the Plaza…

Oh just another brunch at the Plaza, standard for a Sometimes Healthy Girl

And after we're finished, perhaps we'll get some tea at the Ritz...

No no, not in the ACTUAL hotel: we dined at Todd English’ Food Hall in the lower level of the hotel. The restaurant, described on the website as a “European-inspired specialty food hall offering the finest fresh, prepared and gourmet foods set in a stylish and convenient atmosphere,” is supposed to be a little more accessible to the everyday crowd, but the food certainly did not disappoint.

When we arrived we immediately noticed a display of mouth-watering cupcakes in the bakery section.

Can we just have cupcakes for brunch?

We knew it was too early for dessert but we decided it was okay to nosh on a chocolate croissant while we waited!

This was worth spoiling our meal

Once seated, we enjoyed a cheese spread of buffalo, cheddar and goat cheese, complimented by an incredibly delicious fig jam.

Cheese Please!

Next we dug into some main courses. I ordered the Applewood Smoked Turkey Breast while my friends enjoyed the classic flatbread pizza.

The food was incredible, but it was the atmosphere that took the cake. The different stations with open kitchens made our lunch not only delicious, but entertaining. We were lucky enough to sit at the sushi station, so while we didn’t order sushi, we got to watch the chef make it!

No sushi for me, but I'll watch!

After dinner, next on our NYC agenda was shopping. Of course we had to hit up Bloomingdales. But while my friends window shopped here…

We'll take the whole store...

I somehow ended up in this section…

I'm sure everyone makes a beeline to the workout clothes when shopping at Bloomies

We also just happened to be just one block away from my FAVORITE candy store, Dylan’s Candy Bar. My friend was practically begging me to go inside, so I finally gave in (Okay, it was the other way around). I love going to Dylan’s around any candy-related holiday (Christmas = Candy Heaven). With Easter around the corner, there seemed to be an unlimited amount of Peeps…

Purple, yellow, green, blue and orange peeps; oh my!

I purchased the Dark Chocolate Peeps, which were featured in Dylan’s weekly “Candy of the Month” column in SELF magazine (If it’s in SELF, I’m generally interested.)

Peeps dipped in chocolate? What a brilliant idea!

And I couldn’t exit the store without mix and matching at the jelly bean bar (it’s like 16 Handles, but with jelly beans!). My favorite combo is popcorn and cherry. Is that strange?

I'd take a Jelly Bean Bar over a real bar any day

SundayFunday Wrap Report

So we dined at the Plaza, eyed Louis Vuittons at Bloomingdales and topped the fabulous day off with a visit to the best candy store in the world. Was it the ritz and glitz that we see on those glamorous tv shows? No, but it WAS my New York, and I think my guests would agree that it was the perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable weekend.

Off to bed – this packed weekend wiped me out! Hope to get in a nice long run tomorrow morning. 75 here in NYC!!

I’ll leave you with a song that I think truly does capture the essence of this great city…

Tune in tomorrow for some reasons to turn your Monday frown upside down!
