10 Sometimes Healthy Tips for First Time Marathoners

This weekend I learned that it’s not very easy to write a healthy living blog if you’re not feeling healthy. I’m still sick, so much of my weekend was spent indoors ignoring the beautiful weather outside, with the exception of a few much-needed puppy walks.

The last thing I want to do right now is run a marathon, but, as you may or may not know, I have indeed run a few marathons. So today, I’m going to share with you some tips for marathon success. Enjoy!

This rather unattractive picture of me shows most of the medals I’ve won over 8 years of running races, many of them marathons and half marathons. In total, I have run 3 marathons and 12 half marathons, with many 10Ks, 5Ks, etc. mixed in between.

This pic was taken when I moved out of NYC. I was sick then too...I looked about as good that day as I do right now.

While I am by no means a professional runner, I’ve run in enough races to share a few tips for success while training, before, during and after your first long race.

Forgive Me Readers, For I Have Sinned

Forgive me readers/friends, for I have sinned.

I've been up to no good!

It’s been 10 days since my last blog post.

And I feel pretty bad about it. I felt so guilty that I had to distract myself with a giant lollipop…

But, please loyal (hopefully) readers, you’ll have to forgive me, as I’ve been a bit busy with work. Oh, and that job of mine forced me to travel across the country and stay at a stunning hotel on the ocean. And then spend a few days in Las Vegas (but we’ll get to that adventure in another post). Everyone Loves a Good Comeback

I used to eat 26.2 for breakfast...

Confession: I am jealous of most of you…right now.

If you are able to run 3 miles without gasping for dear life and feeling an immense amount of pain and stiffness in your foot, I’m secretly hating you just a little bit. Gotta keep it real.

Since the foot issue started back in April, I find myself reading running blogs less and less. When I started blogging, I had just come off of my 3rd marathon, having run at least a dozen other 15ks and half marathons. I never really admitted it, but I suppose, back then I would have called myself “a runner.” During marathon training, I ran upwards of 50 miles a week. 12 miles felt like a walk in the park. 6 miles was a short run. Life was good. Continue Reading →

A Castle Getaway Over Central Park

When you wake up with a view like this, you’re pretty much disallowed the right of complaining about ANYTHING.

All of New York City...literally right before my very eyes. It's like a castle in the sky!

As mentioned in my last post, my parents are in town for the weekend. So, instead of heading to the beach with the rest of New York City, I’m camping out at my parents hotel room, which, as you can see overlooks all of Central Park.

Now this is what I call a room with a view. Continue Reading →

Meeting my Running Idol and 7 Links Overdue

Ali on the Run!

A couple weeks ago, the lovely Lisa, from I’m an Okie, tagged me in her 7 Links post. I was so excited because 1) Lisa is one of my favorite bloggers and 2) I love going back and reading my old posts.

Alas, I haven’t found the time to do it! I promise I’ve been extremely busy since getting back from vacation. Between random trips to the Hamptons and scandalous exercise classes, I swear I haven’t even had the time to focus on important things…like watching the Jersey Shore last night.

Okay, that’s a lie. Despite two social commitments last night, I somehow found the time to watch Jersey Shore.

Don't sass me, Sammi - You need an intervention!

I could probably spend an entire post talking about how disappointed I am in Sammi (I mean, come on girl, we’ve all been there, but isn’t the fact that you’re on national television enough to motivate you NOT to beg Ron to cuddle? Get it together Sammi Sweetheart.) However, I’ve got far more exiting things to talk about!

Keepin’ It Real

I was obviously out enjoying this gorgeous weather!

And I’m back! So sorry for the brief lack of posts. The weather was absolutely gorgeous here in NYC this weekend, so as you can imagine, I just had to take advantage…

Well, that’s what I’d like you to think, anyway. And in fact, if the whole premise of this blog wasn’t about “keepin’ it real,” I might even let you assume that.

But, The Sometimes Healthy Living Blog is about sharing the good AND the bad, so here goes:

I spent the better part of the weekend indoors hiding from the beautiful weather, friends and most importantly, a mounting stack of work and blog work. To avoid being “knee deep” in emails and projects, I found myself elbow deep in a box of Cinnamon Cheerios, a bag of pretzels and the first season of Felicity (I’ve seen this season at least 10 times – what can I say? I just love that damn show). Continue Reading →

Sleeping As Much as Heidi Klum…Finally

So 10 hours of sleep is your secret? I've "got milk" and sleep - watch out Heidi Klum!

Good afternoon, my friends! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend! Do I sound a bit chipper to you?

You may remember a while back I did a post about the average hours celebrities sleep, based on an article from People.  In short, Ryan Reynolds doesn’t sleep and Heidi Klum sleeps apparently an average of 10 hours a night. Something tells me Ms. Klum is exaggerating, but that is not the point of this post…

Guess what?! Last night I slept as much as Heidi Klum!

That’s right, I went to bed at 8:00! Well, okay, I watched Felicity (most underrated show ever) in bed for 1 hour and then fell asleep at 9:00. I’m anticipating a busy July at work, so I’m trying to fit in extra sleep whenever I can. This Sometimes Healthy Girl may be living in the city that never sleeps, but that doesn’t mean she can’t sneak in a few extra z’s every now and then.

A New Sometimes Healthy Girl

This morning, I woke up bright and early at 7 am feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to run! Sometimes I feel like the entire second half of my week is spent in a fog of tiredness, so it was a pleasant change to have a bit of energy this beautiful Saturday morning. Continue Reading →

Fro Yo With a Smile

Who wouldn't want to run by this?

It was the perfect day for a run here in NYC.

Clear skies, hot temps (but not too hot), and low humidity. The kind of day where it feels like the entire city is out running, biking, walking around, shopping or day drinking. Yet, still, around 10:30, I found myself indoors performing my typical pre-run procrastination routine: SoapNet’s Breakfast in Bed (One Tree Hill and 90201 marathon), bowl(s) of cereal and some major cuddle time with the couch monster.

As enjoyable as it was, I felt a bit guilty wasting even a portion of such beautiful weather on the couch. Thankfully, my best friend, Michelle, called and asked me to meet her down on the Lower East Side track for a run and more importantly, some catch-up time. Michelle was in Europe for 10 days recently, so we had a lot to chat about. Continue Reading →

Tennis Ball Therapy

Just popping in quickly to give an update on the never-ending foot saga. Chloe has caused me to feel rather uninspired on the writing front, so I’ll illustrate how today’s doctor’s appointment went with a few quick pics. Enjoy!

And that, my friends, is a recap of my 60 minute doctor’s appointment! The good news? This problem is 100% treatable and just involves a little bit of work on my end to keep it from flaring up. The bad news? I think the name, plantar fascitis, sounds kind of gross. Plus, the doctor was extremely good-looking (thus, the lipstick face) and there will never be any hope for us now that he has seen my “in-major-need-of-a-pedicure” feet. You win some, you lose some!

Anyway, in all seriousness, I feel so fortunate that this a minor issue I can fix, basically with a FROZEN TENNIS BALL!! I read all the time about runners with much worse injuries, so I am one lucky Sometimes Healthy Girl. I had a feeling this might be the problem, but I don’t believe in the whole self-diagnosis thing. Google does not = Doctor.

I was so excited about my diagnosis that I went straight to work to utilize our brand new “workout” room.

Our New Office Workout Room: Look at those feet go!

Now that the good news is out, I’m going to go enjoy a nice, hot, sweaty…workout!

Happy Feet Friday Everyone!

Question:

Do you ever self-diagnose? Have you ever been right? Ever been wrong?

Have you ever had a cute doctor?

NYRR Mini 10K/Sometimes Healthy Fun Run Race Recap

It’s a bit of a dreary Sunday here in NYC, which means I don’t feel guilty about staying indoors this morning to catch up on blogs, reality television and even a little bit of sleep. In fact, I’d say this rest is well-deserved, considering I spent Saturday morning in Central Park running a relatively solid 10K that, up until the same morning at 6 am, I wasn’t sure I’d be running. Despite humidity and a tbd foot injury (tbd because I still haven’t gone to the doctor), I ran the race to the best of my ability and accomplished what I wanted to do in my first race since the National Marathon: Have a lil’ bit of good old-fashioned fun. So let’s rewind a little bit to see how I got my little broken Sometimes Healthy body to the starting line: Continue Reading →
