Keepin’ It Real

I was obviously out enjoying this gorgeous weather!

And I’m back! So sorry for the brief lack of posts. The weather was absolutely gorgeous here in NYC this weekend, so as you can imagine, I just had to take advantage…

Well, that’s what I’d like you to think, anyway. And in fact, if the whole premise of this blog wasn’t about “keepin’ it real,” I might even let you assume that.

But, The Sometimes Healthy Living Blog is about sharing the good AND the bad, so here goes:

I spent the better part of the weekend indoors hiding from the beautiful weather, friends and most importantly, a mounting stack of work and blog work. To avoid being “knee deep” in emails and projects, I found myself elbow deep in a box of Cinnamon Cheerios, a bag of pretzels and the first season of Felicity (I’ve seen this season at least 10 times – what can I say? I just love that damn show). Continue Reading →

Sleeping As Much as Heidi Klum…Finally

So 10 hours of sleep is your secret? I've "got milk" and sleep - watch out Heidi Klum!

Good afternoon, my friends! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend! Do I sound a bit chipper to you?

You may remember a while back I did a post about the average hours celebrities sleep, based on an article from People.  In short, Ryan Reynolds doesn’t sleep and Heidi Klum sleeps apparently an average of 10 hours a night. Something tells me Ms. Klum is exaggerating, but that is not the point of this post…

Guess what?! Last night I slept as much as Heidi Klum!

That’s right, I went to bed at 8:00! Well, okay, I watched Felicity (most underrated show ever) in bed for 1 hour and then fell asleep at 9:00. I’m anticipating a busy July at work, so I’m trying to fit in extra sleep whenever I can. This Sometimes Healthy Girl may be living in the city that never sleeps, but that doesn’t mean she can’t sneak in a few extra z’s every now and then.

A New Sometimes Healthy Girl

This morning, I woke up bright and early at 7 am feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to run! Sometimes I feel like the entire second half of my week is spent in a fog of tiredness, so it was a pleasant change to have a bit of energy this beautiful Saturday morning. Continue Reading →

A Sometimes Healthy Morning Routine (Sometimes)

Up and at em!

Am I the only one that finds it absolutely fascinating to glimpse into other people’s morning routines? There is something so intriguing to me in learning about how someone else balances it all in the AM. Julie’s routine, for instance, amazes me nearly every day. That girl fits in so much in a short span of time! Gym, dog walking, making an attractive and tasty breakfast, and finally making herself look fabulous (although I doubt it takes much ;-)). Please read her post for tips on streamlining the routine, because let me tell ya, I still haven’t figured it out!

My interest in reading about her routine led me to believe some might be interested in the typical morning for a 20-something New York girl who TRIES to be healthy. Please note: Today’s routine does not always happen. There are many days where I get home too late to wake up at such an early hour or days that I just don’t feel like waking up. Also, when I do fit it in, I’m generally 10-15 minutes behind schedule and running around frantically. But, here’s how it all went down this morning…. Continue Reading →

Pre-Run Procrastination and THE Marathon Playlist

I Don't Wanna Run! I'd rather hang out with Kelly and Brenda!

Happy Saturday! Are you procrastinating like me right now? Over the past few months of marathon training, I developed a reliable Saturday routine. I would wake up by 7 or 8, think about my long run, stress about my messy apartment and relocate to the couch. From there, I’d spend 2-4 hours devouring a giant breakfast (convincing myself it was fuel for my run) and watching SoapNet’s 90210/One Tree Hill Breakfast in Bed. Next, I’d either walk around the block to Dunkin Donuts or put on a pot of coffee to give me a little caffeine boost. Finally, at around 2:00, I’d head out for my long run.

(Don’t want to read the rest of the post? I understand…it is Saturday after all, click here to link to the marathon playlist in iTunes…maybe read the rest of the post while you download?)

National Marathon Recap (Part 2) – The Big Day: It’s a Marathon not a SPRINT

Marathon Day – A Race is a Journey, not a Destination?

Me and my BFF Michelle showing off our beautiful medals

Can you hear the Rudy soundtrack playing in the background? If not, click here, and listen while you read (note: this is entirely optional – I’m just trying to add drama here. Is it working?) Apologies for the lengthy post – I promise, most will be shorter. But seriously, if I can run 26.2 miles, you can spend an extra 5 minutes staring at your screen right?

Anyway, when it comes to long races, I always tell myself a race is a journey and not a destination (thank you Steven Tyler). To me, it’s never really about the finish line or the crowds, but how I can work through obstacles mentally to finish strong. Well, in this race, it was certainly a battle until the end, but it just felt even sweeter when I crossed the finish line. I’m going to break down the race in chunks and recap my thought process at the milestones. I’m hoping the recap will be helpful and entertaining and NOT self-indulgent. Please let me know. I need all the help I can get on this blog. Continue Reading →
