Theme Song FRIDAY: Back Where I Come From

Had to break a couple of rules today and switch Theme Song Thursday to Friday, since I didn’t have time to blog on my b-day. Hope you enjoyed reading about my Birthday Menu Dream Team. I’m proud to report that I was able to eat one item from the menu…

Closing down 16 Handles....slow down party girl

16 Handles. Shocking, I know. I think my parents really need to start worrying about their 28-year-old daughter. She chose “closing out” 16 Handles over closing out a bar. It appears this Sometimes Healthy Girl is officially getting OLD.  I had to work a bit late, since I’m out of the office all week next week. So, I worked until about 9:00, walked the streets of NYC until 10:00 listening to some country music and closed down 16 Handles with Michelle at 11. Believe it or not, it was the perfect way to end my birthday, and I’ve got no complaints :-).

But Back to the Song

In case any of you are unfamiliar with Theme Song Thursdays, you can read the past couple here and here. It’s where I pick a song that describes the way I’m feeling for the day, because every person needs a “theme song.

So, today’s theme song is: Kenny Chesney’s, “Back Where I Come From”

Why? Because at 9 AM tomorrow, I’ll be hopping on a plane to spend a whole entire week “Back Where I Come From:” Omaha, Nebraska. I’ve talked about Omaha many times here on the Sometimes Healthy Living Blog. To sum it up, as I always say, I L-U-V NYC but my heart belongs to Nebraska.

When I graduated from high school, I couldn’t wait to get out of that place. Now, every time a visit to Omaha is around the corner, I can’t wait to go back! And the longer I’m away from it, the stronger my feelings of appreciation grow. I guess absence really does make the heart grow stronger.

Omaha is just your typical mid-western town. There really isn’t anything “unique” about it. But, yet, when I think about the place “where I come from,” I genuinely believe it’s one of the most special places in the world. I’m sure everyone feels that way about their hometown.

Omaha is where many of my best friends live.

Friends through thick and thin

Friends since 3rd grade!

These are the best friends I’ve shared almost 20 years of memories with. We’ve seen each other through the best and worst times, and not a day goes by that I don’t feel extremely lucky to have them. I’m certain they’ll all be in my wedding…should that day ever come.

Omaha is where my parents live.

Look at those lovebirds...dancin like teenagers.

These two have put up with a lot over the years. Raising a Sometimes Healthy Girl isn’t always easy, sweet as I may seem ;-). I wouldn’t be able to survive in NYC without them, so I always promise myself I’ll be an absolute angel whenever I come home. That usually lasts for about a day…As we speak, I’m sure my parents are prepping the house for what they call “Hurricane Jamie.”

Omaha is where my friends are raising families.

They grow up so fast....

It still amazes me that my friends are starting families of their own, while I’m off closing down frozen yogurt shops in NYC. One of my favorite parts of going home is seeing how much my best friend, Becca’s child is growing. The last time I saw him was at his 1st birthday over Thanksgiving, and I cannot wait to see the progress he’s made!

Omaha is where friendly isn’t a rarity, it’s a rule.

Full of Friendly Faces

The man at the gas station looks at the receipt from my credit card just so that he can find my name to tell me, “Thanks for coming, Jamie.” Because saying the thank you without the name just wouldn’t be as personable.

Omaha is where bars of all shapes and sizes exist, even the honky-tonk kind

They serve boiled eggs and sausages on display at honky tonk bars in NE

Sure there are normal bars in Omaha, but there certainly are some weird ones. As you can probably guess, those are the fun ones.

Omaha is where the College World Series takes place…and always has.

At the College World Series in 2010

Since 1950, a bunch of college baseball teams have been coming to Omaha to play in college baseball’s version of the final four. It’s Omaha’s “shining moment” every year. In high school, it meant we could go stalk cute college baseball players. Now that those little boys are too young for me, it just means I can visit home during that time to watch some good baseball and have lots of fun. There is always an energy to Omaha during this time, and I was very sad to miss it this year.

Omaha is where the local grocery store is spacious and enormous, yet the entire staff knows your mother’s name. Omaha is where you can run into high school teachers at the gas station. Omaha is where you can relax a bit and stop moving so fast, because the town is moving just a little slower than New York. Omaha is where the “Old Market” is trendy. Omaha is where you can go to a Snoop Dog concert with your friends on a Thursday night, because what else would you be doing?

Omaha is where I went to my first prom, had my first kiss, drove my first car, drank my first beer and became who I am today. AND

OMAHA…is where I’m going tomorrow!

And with that, please enjoy today’s theme song, Kenny Chesney’s “Back Where I Come From,” which always reminds me of Omaha.

PS – Head on over to Lisa’s blog to read my guest post about my upcoming high school reunion. More about this later…

Question:

What song reminds you of home?

Finish this sentence: My hometown is where…

16 Thoughts on “Theme Song FRIDAY: Back Where I Come From

  1. Omaha is also where my favorite band is from! 😀 Sublime’s self-titled album reminds me of Ocean City, MD a lot, which is where I spent a lot of my high school years (we moved from NoVA to the DE beaches when I was in high school). My older sister and I would drive around listening to that all the time. Being that my town is a beach town, it is known for all things beachy like steamed crabs, boardwalk style fries, but also chicken farms (it’s Delaware’s second largest industry) and corn fields. They also have no sales tax in DE. Woo! Haha. Glad you had a great birthday! My 28th birthday was spent watching a movie and eating chinese. I thought it was a big success.

  2. Aw, I loved this! There is nothing like going home!

  3. oh man I hate when the cashier says “thank you…” and my name cuz the credit card says Catherine, which is ONLY my trouble name and never what I’m called in real life

My hometown is where its FREEZING 8 months out of the year…

    • oh wow! That is crazy – I must go on over to your blog and check out where you live… although I think I have a good guess. I do appreciate when the cashiers take the extra step to learn my name. I think it’s cute. haha

  4. First of all, Happy Birthday on Thursday 🙂
Second, have a fab time at home! There is nothing like going back to the familiar places in life
